Post Black spot disease in my blood parrot? Posted: Wed Jul 14, 2010 10:05 pm

One of my blood parrots is showing signs of black spot disease. He (she, who knows? lol) has black edges on all of his fins and now has a black spot on his head. This is a recent development; he was not purchased this way.

I researched like mad...tested the water and it's all within what it is normally (Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0, and pH 8.0). I did a partial water change. None of the other fish in the tank (55 gallon, 12 assorted African cichlids, 1 other parrot, 1 sailfin pleco (I think; was told he was common but looks more like a sailfin) and a synodontis) are showing any signs of ill health.

According to the research, one way to help is treating with Maracide. How do I do this? Do I treat the whole tank or put him in a separate tank?

Thanks for any insight you can offer!

Probably would be best to treat in his own tank if no other fish are infected. Saves you and medication as well. Treating for something to where the cause is unknown can be a little dangerous. Just be sure to keep an eye on him for any stress.

Not sure if this will help but you can read my article on this subject here. Maybe it can point you in the right direction. I wrote it just for a little background and possible causes to maybe help understand it as well.

How about posting a photo of the fish in question. A lot of hybrid's will get some blotching or dirty appearance with age.

yea. i agree. it seems alot of those posts on the net are about dragonsblood peacocks. it seems they get alot of those at times too. i know mine did...but it seemed to be the females more so than the males.

Thanks for the replies. I tried to get pictures last night but it was late and he wouldn't come out of his plant for me to get good shots (he goes to "sleep" at about 9pm every night, weird little critter!). Hopefully these pictures help.

Thanks, everyone. I thought about the blotching but didn't think his fins would change colors or "blotch" too and I didn't think he was old enough to start doing that. :)

I looked at pictures of what is termed "black spot disease" in parrots and it looks like him...but pictures of other fish with the disease look more like black pimples...interesting.

Thanks for the help!
